The bulk of a person’s waking life is spent at work. Some are more fortunate than others in that they have bright clean offices or work places others, not so.
To most people they would think that I fit into the “ not so” category. My place of work is about 130 years old, a hideous Victorian edifice feared by many, hated by some, but misunderstood by most. For the last 18 years I have worked at Her Majesty’s Prison, Hedon Road, Hull.
Prisons are made up of people and people make history. I am graced with being able to work in a place that is steeped in it.
Those dark forbidding walls start to come alive when you go back through the years and realise that there is more to the place than purely bricks and mortar. I hope in the coming pages to give a little insight into what has gone on behind the walls over the centuries and perhaps show some of the major changes that have shaped the present system.
